Replace your Certificate

If your certificate is about to expire or maybe already expired, you need to replace your certificate with a new one. You can do this via the empower backend installer.

 

Step-by-Step Guide

  1.  Start the empower backend installer by double-clicking on "backendSetup.exe".

  2. The empower backend setup opens. To continue the process, click on "Configure"!

  3. Please enter your hostname. Take the default port and click "Next".

  4. In the next step, you can replace your certificate. There are 3 possibilities:
     a) A company certificate (Use a certificate issued by your IT department). 
         Click on "Browse" and select your certificate and confirm it with the certificate password.

     b) A self-signed certificate (Use a self-signed certificate) not recommended

     c) A LetsEncrypt certificate (Use a free certificate issued by LetsEncrypt) recommended.
         Enter your e-mail address with which you created your LetsEncrypt certificate.

    Continue the process by clicking on "Next"

  5. Basically, all you have to do now is finish the process by following the installation process. You can accept all default settings.
    Select "Keep the current service user" and confirm the process with "Next".

  6. Select your cache folder. By default it is set to "Default". Press "Next" again (If presets exist, just apply them).

  7. Configure your database connection by filling in the "Database Server Name" and "Database Name" fields and select the authentication method. Confirm your selection by pressing "Apply" (If presets exist, just apply them).

  8. The installer updates and automatically takes you to the next point. This may take a few minutes.

  9. Either log in via your Windows account or use  SQL login data to access the database. After you have made your selection, click on "Next". (If presets exist, just apply them)

  10. In the next step, make sure that you have a current, functional database backup. If so, confirm the statement by clicking the checkbox. Continue the process by clicking "Next".

  11. Continue the process by clicking on "Apply"

  12. Now configure the user directory synchronization and click on "Next". (If presets exist, just apply them).

  13. Now configure your Active Directory synchronization and click on "Next" (If presets exist, just apply them).

  14.  In the next step, you can add more settings for Active Direvtory synchronization and click on "Next" (If presets exist, just apply them).

  15. Continue by clicking on "Apply"

  16. Confirm the checkbox and press "Next" again

  18. Finish the process by clicking on "Finish"

If a self-signed certificate was selected in 4), the empower backend installer will create a folder on the desktop called "empower Client Configuration Files". Execute the following steps to complete the process (if you have selected a Company Certificate/LetsEncrypt you do not need to do this)

  1. Open the folder and install the created certificate by opening empower.crt

  2. Press "Install Certificate..."

  3. Choose between "Current User" or "Local Machine" and continue the process by clicking on "Next".

  4. The certificate must be installed as a trusted root certificate authority. To do this, click on "Place all certificates in the following store" and click on "Browse"

    Select "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" and confirm it with "OK" and then click "Next".

  5. Finish the process by clicking on "Finish"
